Why 40 days service to overlords in middle ages?

After the death of the wife of emperor Antoninus Puis, he had this temple constructed in her honor, and when Antoninus died, it was rededicated for both of them. The temple was turned into a church in the middle ages. Much of the temple is well preserved.
