What does rosebud mean?

After Kane dies, an obituary newsreel documenting the events in Kane's public life is shown. The producer of the newsreel asks a reporter, Thompson, to find out about Kane's private life and personality, in particular to help determine the meaning behind Kane's last word, "rosebud." The reporter interviews Kane's friends and associates, and Kane's story unfolds as a series of flashbacks.
