The 2006 Israel-Gaza conflict refers to the ongoing series of battles between Palestinian militants and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Large-scale conventional warfare beyond the peripheries of the Gaza Strip began when Israel launched Operation Summer Rains (Hebrew: מבצע גשמי קיץ, Mivtza Gishmey Kayitz), the codename for an IDF military operation in the Gaza Strip that began on June 28, 2006, and its first major mobilization into the Gaza Strip since Israel's unilateral disengagement plan was implemented between August and September of 2005.
