Question
How do I budget to build a home?
Answer
The Yankees' new stadium comes during a spate of stadium projects in the New York region, bringing a trend to New York that has affected the nation since the construction of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, which has led to new sports venues for the majority of MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA teams, mostly using public funds. In 2005, after being pushed for several years as the centerpiece of New York City's bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics, New York state legislators shelved the city's plan to build a football stadium for the New York Jets on the West Side of Manhattan. Opposed by local community groups and by Cablevision, which mounted a vast advertising campaign against the project due to the loss of events and income to the new stadium from Madison Square Garden (owned by Cablevision), the Jets' stadium plan was met with much public skepticism and eventually failed. In 2004, after buying the New Jersey Nets basketball team, developer Bruce Ratner announced he would build an arena atop the Atlantic Avenue rail terminal near downtown Brooklyn. Ratner's project has changed scope several times, and protest groups have gained momentum as celebrities have stepped in to oppose the project. Cablevision, which has long sought to build a new arena for the New York Knicks and Rangers, is seeking to link the project to the new Penn Station, to be built in the James Farley Post Office across from Madison Square Garden. The Municipal Art Society and other groups have opposed the project. New Jersey is building a new football stadium in the Meadowlands, to be the shared home for the New York Giants and Jets. The New Jersey Devils plan to open an arena in Newark in 2007 that will be connected to Manhattan by PATH trains. And next door in Harrison, the New York Red Bulls plan to open their new Red Bull Park by 2008.
